To Smoke Or Not To Smoke

Now And Then

( Musings )

James Seng my favourite local geek* writes about how things were……
Anyway, Maynard is an old friend and there is an interesting story of how we met more 10 years ago. Back then, I was working at the first and only ISP in Singapore and one fine day, we discovered an intruder in our system. My […]

Government Smoking Ban Survey

I recently found the Singapore Government’s Feedback Unit Portal. Its soliciting on various issues. Hmm. They say that at the end of every month the results are collated and sent in to the relevant perm secs. Not that I think that it would make any real difference. I think Singapore will have a […]

Moran

So I was reading the ST Forum pages the other day (dec 17 2004) . I read the letter titled “Police did right in rejecting gay party” by Dr Thio Su Mien (Doctor ok don play play.) I would link to the letter but Straits Times has this annoying free registration to read the online […]

Media is not the Message

( Musings )

One afternoon at Raffles City being a snapalicious with my phonealicious…

The first sign was snapped at Robinson’s. It seemed really odd to have money referred to as *media*. They normally go the more circumlocutious route of calling it ‘mode/method of payment’. My immediate associations with the word media have less to do with […]

Obligatory Election Rant

( Musings )

I am sitting here reloading the newsites every 20 minutes.

I remember the summer of 2000 , sitting around the apartment with my then housemate. He had just signed up with the U.S Army after graduating from college. He joked that as long Bush didn’t get elected he would not see war action. […]

The Human Spirit

( Musings )

I was on my way to watch the temple burn on an art bus. The background information is an intricately bigger than life wooden temple at burning man and a former schoolbus type vehicle that was transformed to a mobile disco - quite literally. The driver - a german in the US! - […]

I had a class last week and strangely enough, there was a Singaporean in my class who’d lived in SF for 15 years. She announced to the class that, ‘for everyone’s information, Singaporeans avoid each other in san francisco”… since then she has not had one single conversation with me. Who would have expected another […]

Critical mass

( Musings )

Uncontrolled nuclear chain reactions need critical mass to happen. Maybe uncontrolled social chain reactions require the same critical mass in the number of individuals involved.

What would that number be?

(If love counts as an uncontrolled reaction then the number is >1. If self-love also counts then it’s any number >0, I suppose.)
